You’re Invited to Google Mail – Virus & Malware

We’re seeing quite the uptick in spoofed “Your Friend has invited you to open a Google mail account” emails lately.

The typical email comes with a subject line and From address such as:

Subject:      Edmond Fletcher has invited you to open a Google mail account
From:     “Edmond Fletcher” <>

The clever part of this approach is the that while the sending email addresses are completely randomized, the pretty name used for the invitations appears to have been stripped from the address book of previously infected user’s email address books.

For the example at hand, this means that “Edmond Fletcher” might actually be a person the recipient recognizes and this will increase the chance of these emails luring in victims.

So while the email claims to come from one source, the true sender is a previously compromised personal computer, operating as part of a zombie botnet sending spam and virus and trojan emails to spread itself further.

The body of the email is also very well designed, which will also lead to an above average level of recipient compliance:

While the email looks pretty convincing, no hyper-links actually lead to a legitimate Google or Gmail page.  Instead, every link within these messages will take you to the spammer’s malware site which will attempt to download code to infect the visitor’s computer.
