An oldie but a goodie, the Greeting Card Virus is back. The current campaign spoofs your own address as the sender, or uses a random address pretending to be from your same domain. For example:
Subject: You Have Received a Greeting Card
From: “123greetings.com” <administrator@YourDomain.com>
To: <administrator@YourDomain.com>
Notice that the “Pretty From Address” claims to be from “123greetings.com” when if fact these emails are not from 123greetings.com nor are they actually from your own domain. Instead the infection is spread by infected personal computers that are now zombie machines as part of a larger bot-net.
The body of the email itself is pretty straightforward:
To pick up your eCard, click on the following link (or copy & paste it into your web browser):
http://maxitourtravel.com/card.exe
Your card will be aviailable for pick-up beginning for the next 30 days.
The included web address will change, but in each case it points to an attack site that, if loaded, will try to infect the visitor’s computer. In no case, will the site actually be “123greetings.com.” If the infection is successful, then the newly compromised system will be used to send spam and to further the infection by broadcasting more of the same virus emails.
