You just might start receiving a “Thank you from Google!” in response to a resume you may or may not recall ever submitting.
Emails making the rounds right now spoof the Google domain sending address:
Subject: Thank you from Google!
From: resume-thanks@google.com
When in fact these emails originate from compromised mail servers having nothing to do with Google.
Interestingly, the compromised servers are even attempting to spoof the Google domain within the SMTP conversation, using a bogus “helo” for example:
‘from mail.printing.org ([12.34.20.131] helo=google.com) by MailFilter1.onlymyemail.com (envelope-from <resume-thanks@google.com>) id 1O2DM5-0006DE-Fu for user@domain.com; Wed, 14 Apr 2010 20:54:56 -0400′
While the compromised mail server’s “helo” announces “google.com” the reality is that IP address instead resolves to mail.printing.org, for this one example, with various other mail servers compromised as well.
A complete example of this Google Virus/Trojan:
The clever social engineering with this email is that in this economy, it’s likely that countless job-seekers have actually submitted a resume to Google, and even those that haven’t might be tempted to follow the email’s directions:
Click on the attached file to review your submitted application.
Of course the attachments carry the Trojan/Virus payload:
- CV-20100120-112.zip
- document.pdf .exe
While the email closes with “Have fun and thanks again for applying to Google!” there won’t be much joy for those who execute either of these attachments and infect their computers.
