Here’s something we really don’t see every day….
We recently received an email claiming to be from the U.S Department of Justice Victim Notification System (VNS)
Subject: US Department of Justice Victim Notification System
From: Courtney Walker <fedemail@vns.usdoj.gov>
To: Business Representative <address>
Our typical “common sense” check for email Phishing Fraud starts with the obvious:
- Overly serious/threatening Subject line…. check!
- Human sender doesn’t match email address…. check!
- Impersonal and generic salutation… check!
The email itself open with:
DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL.

Email marketing is cheap: production costs are nearly nonexistent; delivery is free; you can do reasonably accurate targeting with minimal effort; and you don’t need to own any equipment.
This is why there is so much spam.

This is and old one from The Onion but still funny. We bumped into it while doing some research the other day. Now we have to look for a new job. We didn’t realize we were hurting so many people by blocking spam.
“For millions of poorly hung American men, spam is a vital source of information about penis-enlargement options, and our elected officials have no right to take it away from them.”

As experts in spam control we have concluded that there’s a secret spammer’s manual out there that is followed, to varying degrees, by nearly all spammers. We thought it would be fun to try to reverse engineer this manual based on the types of things we see repeated in campaign after campaign.

Every so often we get the privilege of reading a laugh out loud funny fraud attempt.
Submitted for your enjoyment:

From: Western Union <westenunion11@live.com>
The subject alone is pretty funny but wait until you ready the message body.

If you don’t respect your online identity, nobody else will and before long your in-box will rot and fall off. At least that’s what our mother told us. She also told us to eat our vegetables that we’d go blind if we forwarded email to ourselves.
We usually take what Mom says with a grain of salt.

“The security of your account is important to us” says the subject of an email message sent to one of our customers by AT&T|Universal Card.
It came to our attention because it’s so fiendishly difficult to determine whether or not it’s a phishing attempt.
Subject: The security of your account is important to us
From: AT&T Universal Card <universalcard@info4.citibank.com>
Rather than bore you with the details of how we decided this message was legitimate we thought we’d apply some of the suggestions found on the Anti-Phishing Council’s Phishing Page and see if we should trust this email.

The image of Charlie Brown flying through the air after attempting to kick a football and having it snatched away by Lucy has become something of a cultural icon. To some extent we feel sympathy for Charlie but at the same time we have to wonder why he keeps falling for it.
Time after time Lucy promises to hold the ball and every time Charlie Brown ends up on his back after she tricks him.
Today we’re going to look at the email fraud equivalent of Lucy holding the football.
