It’s interesting how desperate some spammers have become in response to modern email filtering techniques. While there are a lot of examples to demonstrate, one of our favorites is the return of the “Image Spam” but with the twist that they don’t even bother to hyperlink the images to their spam commerce sites.
Instead, they include only a wavy and distorted image pushing their product (typically medications) and contained in the image is the request that you to manually type their spam server sales website URL into your browser’s address bar yourself.

All of this extra effort is presumably to help their emails avoid anti-spam filtering. That they would make it this hard for those few foolish enough to trust spammers to sell legitimate merchandise (let alone pharmaceuticals) to visit the spammers e-commerce site speaks volumes as to how hard it has become to avoid filtering.
Ironically, despite the great compromises they are making in order to avoid filtering, the technique doesn’t have a very good success rate when it comes getting their spam delivered; and one must assume the “click-through rates” are quite dismal, particularly since the recipient can’t actually “click-through” even if they wanted to.
