GoDaddy.com Order Confirmation – Fraud

Large volumes of emails are being sent spoofing GoDaddy email transaction receipts. Messages generally arrive:

Subject:      GoDaddy.com Order Confirmation
From:     <sales@godaddy.com>

The sending address is spoofed, but you can bet GoDaddy is receiving countless bounced emails and hostile replies.

The email itself looks very well designed, and pulls actual images and graphics from GoDaddy’s servers:

From what we can tell, these emails are primarily sent to addresses that were used to register domains with GoDaddy, indicating that WhoIs records have been scrapped (and in large numbers) for this campaign.

The “bait” in this spam is the claim that you have initiated a transaction for:

QTY of 300  .INFO Bulk Domain Name Registration (201-500)

And the total for this bogus registration is $357.00 which is likely enough of a scare to get recipients to click-through to the spammer’s web sites.

Because these emails appear to be quite legitimate (when in fact all links take you to spam hosting and malware sites) and also because they are sent to addresses that have actually registered domains with GoDaddy, they appear to be successfully tricking a large percentage of recipients, many of whom report these emails as being false-positives when our spam filtering systems correctly block them.
