2009: A Boring Year In Spam

Well 2009 is history, we know, we can’t believe it’s almost March already either.  While previous years have been marked by either large increases in spam traffic, or sometimes a decrease followed by an increase, 2009 was pretty bland.

After the jump we’ve got some graphs and commentary from 2009.

Below is a graph of the messages we recorded receiving over the past year both spam and legitimate.  Most of the year was pretty level, things did pick up towards the end of October, but then in early December it started getting quiet.

On the other hand connections that we rejected from identified spam zombies and other compromised hosts had considerable more fluctuation.May was a pretty exciting month as the number of active bots trying to connect to our servers peaked, but by June it appears they got the idea that we weren’t going to open the door for them.

All in all 2009 was a pretty boring year in the anti-spam business.  Sure there was still the endless game of measures and counter-measures played out between the spammers and anti-spammers, but it appears that the volume of spam has pretty much leveled out.
